Dr. DeGroot is a native of Massachusetts. He got his medical degree at the University of Chicago in 1987. He did his residency at the Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore Maryland. Dr. DeGroot completed a fellowship in musculoskeletal oncology at Harvard University - Massachusetts General hospital, and was a visiting fellow in orthopedic oncology at the Rizzoli Institute in Bologna, Italy.
Dr. DeGroot has been named one of Boston's "Top Doctors" and also named one of the "Leading Physicians of the World." He has been doing volunteer work in Nicaragua, Central America for more than 12 years, where he performs surgery, teaches students and residents, and participates in national program development for orthopedic education. He sponsors a International Observership for orthopedics to surgeons-in-training from all over the world. Dr. DeGroot speaks French, Spanish and Italian.

Dr DeGroot has been an editor or member of the scientific advisory board of numerous significant educational websites, including Medscape - WebMD, Orthoteers, and Bone Cancer International, and he is the principal author of the website Bonetumor.org, the most comprehensive on-line resource for orthopedic tumors. Dr. DrGroot has been awarded the academic title of Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery. He was formerly on the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Medical School and at the Tufts University medical school.
Dr. DeGroot currently practices orthopedic surgery in two locations - Key West, Florida and New Bedford, Massachusetts
